Diamond skull

Young British Artists (YBA) are group of students attended Goldsmiths College in London. They became representatives of Britart and were called "Young British Artists" after the exhibition presented by Saatchi Gallery in 1992.Those artists brought "shock tactics" to the world of contemporary art, like using throwaway materials or animals etc.

Damien Hirst is one of the leading artists of the YBA. His sculpture "For the love of God" was produced in 2007.It is a human skull, covered with platinum cast and 8,601 diamonds. In the forehead of the skull there is a pink diamond with the shape of pear. In 1993, artist John LeKay, Hirst`s friend, presented a skull with crystals (Spiritus Callidus). Hirst`s work is in some way is different from crystal skull. "For the love of God" is totally covered with diamonds, except the real human teeth. The theme of death was not new for Hirst in this work. Most of his works were related to death. Hirst called the work after mother’s question "For the love of God, what are you going to do now?"

In my opinion, it is an exact form of Mercantilism. I do not think that the work shows or gives any meaning as a work of art. Skull is just a skull, with diamonds or not. I do not think that so much money and means should be spent for decorating a skull. "For the love of God" serves for showing status of an owner.

  2. I agree with some part of your opinion. Damien Hirst’s diamond skull, For the love of god, will be sold at auction if it dies net find a buyer, according to the artist. I’ve found an article which is about his work the diamond skull and that said -for the love of God was first displayed in the exhibition ‘Beyond Belief’ at White Cub in June 2007. Its asking price was £ 50m. In August 2007 Mr Dunphy told us that he was talking to “a group composed of a number of interested individual who are looking to purchase the skull price of $100m”. He has now told Time that he; Joping and Hirst own the “controlling interest in the work”. He also says the price of the skull now “would be double” or £100m.-By Cristina Ruiz/2008 The Art Newspaper- It could be seen like the purpose of this work is for sale and issues about this work is all about its cost. What is more, we can see that the price is increased even about twice of the first price. As far as I concerned, although artists didn’t intend causing this situation, It is considered as part of Mercantilism.

  3. Damian Hirst is an interesting artist in this sense, alot of people would look at his work and go WHY is that art?
thats the point of his works, to show off his abstract way of thinking and perceiving or whether its to show how he can pull of something as materialistic and the diamond skull.

His idea behind the skull is genious, but at the same time its repulsive.
thats what makes his work so remarkable is the fact people go away thinking about it, the idea of his work lingers.
That is what makes a fantastic artist!!

  4. Can somebody tell me whats the difference between Diamond skull and Plastic skull? What do those diamonds change? (or plastic) In your opinion, should any work of art carry some meaning? And what Hirst wants to say by covering a human skull with diamonds?

  5. I agree with you on some at some point as u said " I do not think that so much money and means should be spent for decorating a skull".even i think he should have spent this big amount in helping homeless people and would have made something that is less expensive and not scary as this is."for the love of God"relates to renaissance mercantilism as its totally covered with diamond which symbolize the incredible wealth and status of the artist Damian Hirst in the society. But i don't agree with u on the point of not considering it as a art work because for me everything happens in the art world is a art .
but i still don't get why anyone will spend so much of time and money to decorate someones scull?
